The first year was difficult, both for reasons I had anticipated and others I hadn't. Among the anticipated difficulties were the financial and logistical aspects: the cost of renovating the farmhouse bathrooms to commercial standards, the months it took to obtain permits, the investment in tables and chairs, and the portable heating and air conditioning equipment needed for a beautiful but un-air-conditioned space. There were also unexpected, more personal difficulties. Part of it simply involved learning how to run a business I had created from a foundation I had inherited from a woman whose passing was still painful for me.

What made it difficult was the specific exhaustion that comes with being responsible for other people's important days, the burden of being the one who makes sure the photos look good, the flowers don't wilt, the caterer arrives on time, and if the rain comes, it's handled with enough grace that no one remembers it as a disaster.
